We had a winter storm warning

that expired tonight. Needless to say, we did get snow. That 7.5"ish measurement was taken around 9:30-10 this morning, on a flat surface that had been clean before the snow started falling last night shortly before ten.

We are rather excited that the snow gauge in the yard has registered one foot, since for a fair portion of the winter it hasn't had much of anything to register at all. The guy who made this for me by special request will probably be happy too.

A few random pictures of snow evidence.

Needless to say, Oribel was NOT impressed with the stuff coming down that was keeping her inside. (Though she had plenty of opportunities to go out if she had wanted to.)

One way to spend a snowy couple of days

First you take a nice skein of yarn,
and then you wind it into two yarn cakes.

At that point you cast on for a sock. Then you knit some ribbing, and then for the sake of science, you do it all again on the other brand of needles you have "in the same size." After that ribbing is done, you keep knitting for the leg, and when that is done, you go back to the first set of needles and make another leg. If you start this on a snowy Friday afternoon, there might be stopping for the dinner fixing thing and sleep at some point, but only when you are so tired that you are having a hard time keeping your eyes open. Then on the snowy Saturday you finish the second leg and move on. From there you make a heel flap, and then a second one, turn a heel, and then another and make a gusset.

Then you get to make another gusset, and you are all ready to knit a foot or two. Once again you might be interrupted with the dinner cooking, and making a cherry pie for a friend; leaving you here, all ready to knit a couple of feet and toes. But I am certain there will be a finished pair of socks come bedtime on Sunday.

There was some admiring of glaring at the six plus inches of snow we have gotten since Friday morning. After all, Thursday at noon we could see the grass greening up in the yard and the beginnings of bulbs coming up in the garden.

Late post and snow stories

Suzanne tagged me some time ago for the "You make My Day" Award. I will admit to being a bit surprised, but will say a big "Thanks!" Since I am so late in posting about it, I might wind up tagging someone who has already been hit, so am going to skip that part. If are reading this and want to play, leave me a note and post on your blog about who makes your day!
Today started out just fine and wonderful. It involved baking cookies for a couple of packages I am mailing to college students tomorrow. I also made granola yesterday for one of the boxes. (The other box isn't too crazy about granola, but will be getting other yummy things.) Then I worked on an overdue post, but saved it for later while I took Hubband out to the airport. Of course since I was already out and way past the other side of town I ran a few errands on my way home. Unfortunately when I got home, the very thing I have been a bit worried about happened. My car got stuck in the snow in our driveway. We have had a fair amount of snow, the wind has blown a fair amount more onto the drive, and we haven't really shoveled it much this year. Normally this isn't a problem for my car, but the carpet cleaners got stuck last week and we had to push them out, so that chewed up the snow quite a bit. Then a friend almost got stuck as he slid around on Sunday, so that chewed some more up. (The propane delivery truck had no trouble yesterday, but I am sure that all that weight was the saving factor.) Well, thank goodness for very kind neighbors and their tractor to pull me out of the drift I had managed to slide on/into and get very stuck. He also scooped off a bucket load of snow on his way out of the drive. If the snow we are getting tonight doesn't cover it up, maybe you'll get a picture of it tomorrow.
Oh, have I ever mentioned that we have a steep slope from the road down to our garage? That doesn't always help either. I'll leave you with a picture of our driveway last spring, without any snow. Not at all what it looks like now and not the best view of the slope, but it is green!

Thank goodness for knitting

Today I was glad to have my knitting in the car with me. I loaded up myself and my stuff for my usual Wednesday gig and headed off. The roads around my house and the highway were in pretty good shape considering the blizzard we had all afternoon and into the evening yesterday. I drove to my exit, exited as usual, though carefully as there was an icy pack snow floor on the road at that point. Of course it also had sand/salt mix on top of it. I stopped for the red light and immediately after it turned green, a van blew past me on the left as a guy in a truck was turning left across the intersection from me. Well, needless to say, the two vehicles were unable to avoid crashing into each other. I waited a little bit to make sure they were all done moving and pulled forward from my stopping point, through the intersection and over to the side of the road. Several other vehicles drove on past and I am sure they had drivers who had also witnessed said accident. It wasn't like we were the only three cars on the road at 10:30 in the morning. Anyway, I was glad to have knitting to work on while waiting to give my witness info etc. Otherwise it would have been a boring and cold twenty-five minutes, instead of just cold. I was also glad that the heater in my car works.
Thanks to all for the well wishes for Oribel. Normally the vet's office likes to keep surgery patients until between three and five, but when they called to say that everything had gone well, they said I could pick her up anytime after two if I wanted because of the impending weather forecast (but they did have appointments for the whole afternoon so it was up to me). Then at one they called and asked if it would be possible for me to come get her as they were trying to close by two. Yep, our weather went downhill fast. I will say it is a good thing I have car with all-wheel drive (the automatic version). The drifts were deep enough on the secondary road that leads from my street to the main road that I never would have made it otherwise. The main road wasn't a heck of a lot better drift-wise. The wind, blowing snow, visibility thing didn't help much either. But I got to the vet and we got home all safe and sound. Oribel was rather unsteady on her feet the rest of the day and didn't really care to have the dogs snuffling "hospital smells" on her so closely (including Simon who usually barks at her whenever he notices her within about 12-18 inches of him). She is supposed to be on restricted exercises of no running, jumping, or climbing for a week. Right. Last night she tried to jump up to the sink to get a drink of water. It didn't work out so well for her, but she tried anyway. Today she is back to jumping on her gate, the sink, and as I type this, I am noticing she has very carefully balanced her whole self on the rim of the fish bowl and is alternating between trying to get a drink and pet the fish.
Of course she (sort of) moved when I cam over, which is probably a good thing. I can't imagine that falling into a fish bowl is very good for stitches and the "do not allow your pet to lick or chew at the incision" thing. Do these look like the ears of someone who is going to cooperate with "restricted exercise"?

Kittens in the snow and annual winter happenings

Miss Oribel keeps telling us that she wants to go out in the snow again. So we decided to indulge her a bit yesterday . I don't think the girls or I ever expected that she would want to stay out there as long as she did. She can out last three of us on keeping track of her outside as well as fetch.

It would seem that Oribel really thought the Luminaries needed a very close personal inspection.

I think she might have been checking to see if anything had gone under the bench while she was up on it. She spent a fair amount of time under this bench in the corner watching the birds and hoping to catch one. She almost made it when one little bird hopped pretty close before noticing that there was a cat on the deck.
It might have looked like she had come over to come back in the house, but she hadn't. As near as I could figure she was just checking in at home-base. Whenever we thought she wanted in and would open the door, off she would go again to explore more stuff and see if there were any more birds to be had.

Apparently Oribel likes the view from the rocking chair as much as I do.

Still checking out everything she can. She obviously really didn't care about all the snow that kept falling and covering her all over.

We finally had to make her come back in because she kept shivering. I think she decided to take her frustration of being inside out on the bear that lives on the stairs.

This the crazy girl trying to get back out outside into the snow. She kept going nuts trying to scratch her way through the door.

Yesterday was determined to be the first night of the "Annual Winter Camp Out." The tent was set up and DTY slept out last night. It wasn't very cold, only around 17 above zero: some years this has been done when it is around zero or below when this happens. Normally both DTY and Hubband do the "Winter Camp Out," but Hubband seems to be coming down with a cold. Since he is headed overseas the first week of January, he decided to stay in and is hoping he will be better tonight to participate in this craziness activity.

Family sharing all the way across the country

So I walk past my computer and glance at the sidebar where I have current weather conditions for home and where each of the girls are at school. I was expecting the snow icon for here, and for Duluth, but Portland? So I looked it up and this is what I found:

Wunderground Portland
